Dave won the prestigious ‘North West Comedian of the Year’ award in 1990. He then became a regular on the club circuit, supporting esteemed acts such as Cannon & Ball, Max Boyce, Eddie Izzard, and Jack Dee.
Teaming up with Rick Sykes in 1992, Spikey formed the dynamic duo known as Spikey and Sykey, appearing on Central TV’s ‘New Faces’ and being voted the ‘Best Up and Coming Comedian’ by the Manchester Evening News.
Dave maintained his comedy career at night while working as the Chief Biomedical Scientist in Haematology at the Royal Bolton Hospital. He became a compere and met Peter Kay in 1996. Together, the fellow Boltonians put their similar comedic styles together to write and perform in ‘Mad for the A6’ and ‘The Services’ for Channel 4’s Comedy Lab, laying the groundwork for their debut series ‘The Peter Kay Thing’. They were awarded ‘Best New TV Comedy’ at the British Comedy Awards.
Dave turned to comedy full time. Along with Peter Kay he co-wrote and co-starred in two seasons of the critically acclaimed ‘Phoenix Nights’. Dave Spikey received his second British Comedy Award and a nomination for Best Comedy Newcomer. ‘Phoenix Nights’ won the People’s Choice Award, the Situation Comedy & Comedy Drama Award at the RTS Programme Awards, and was even nominated for a Bafta Award. Building on this success, he embarked on a national tour in 2003.
Dave showcased his solo writing and acting ability, writing and starring in ITV’s ‘Dead Man Weds’ alongside Johnny Vegas.
